Master Program of Innovation for Design and Engineering

Curriculum

The Master's Degree Program for Innovation in Design and Engineering aims to help students acquire the knowledge, skills, and competencies essential for monozukuri architects.

The business community is looking for engineers who can undertake highly professional and creative activities. This makes it necessary to develop engineers who are capable of teaming with monozukuri specialists, gauging potential customer expectations, and creating functional design with kansei, thus embodying and offering a new set of values to consumers. In other words, it is necessary to develop engineers who can develop products and services in a creative and rational fashion to maximize customer benefits. In the past, such engineers have been broadly categorized into the following two groups:

1.Product planning managers: They are in charge of planning products and proposing the development of these products. They can gauge latent market needs, present future visions to customers, and envision the optimal features of next generation products and services.

2.Product development managers: Once the product plan is approved, they are responsible for managing the process from optimal designing to manufacturing by leveraging their expertise in kansei design and functional design.

AIIT defines monozukuri architects as professional engineers with the knowledge and skills to fulfill the above two functions and who are capable of overseeing and managing the entire product development cycle from product planning to product design to manufacturing (i.e. capable of overseeing and managing the entire monozukuri process) . The Master's Degree Program for Innovation in Design and Engineering will provide students with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to become monozukuri architects. The core of this master's degree program is a synthesis of kansei design and functional design.

To become monozukuri architects as envisioned in the Master's Degree Program for Innovation in Design and Engineering, students must acquire the basic knowledge essential for acquiring advanced knowledge in product innovation, industrial design, digital technology, and industrial materials, as well as for business execution. In addition, students must acquire competencies that enable them to properly leverage such knowledge.

The first-year curriculum in this master's degree program will provide students with an opportunity to acquire the appropriate body of knowledge and the basic knowledge essential for business execution and the basic cognitive approaches essential for monozukuri architects. The second-year curriculum is designed so students will be able to further develop competencies through project-based learning (PBL) classes, i.e. Advanced Exercises: Innovation in Design and Engineering I, II and III. The curriculum assumes four course variations based on students' future career aspirations.

Concept of The Master's Degree Program for Innovation in Design and Engineering

Based on the belief that something novel to accelerate innovation is created when kansei is backed up by function, AIIT aims to create a high level of values that would not be possible under an independent body of knowledge by synthesizing kansei design, engineering, and functional design, which have been considered in the past as separate and extraneous. The master's degree program is primarily intended for working people who aspire to systematically acquire practical monozukuri techniques while working full-time in the fields of industrial design, marketing, planning, or development in the real business world, as well as for students who have completed their design or engineering studies at universities and aspire to a higher level of knowledge and practical skills as required in the business community. The master's degree program will develop monozukuri architects who can drive innovation as designers integrating kansei and function into design.
